Revisiting Old Processes: Optimizing the Messaging Carousel

When I took ownership of the messaging carousel in Card Benefits, tiles took four sprints (8 weeks) to move from conception to launch—far too long for an agile firm. Although design, backend, and UI teams were supposed to collaborate, they were actually operating in a waterfall model, working in silos and waiting on each other unnecessarily.
To improve efficiency, I:
- Conducted process discovery: Met with designers, backend engineers, UI developers, and analytics to map out dependencies and uncover inefficiencies.
- Identified parallel work opportunities: Found that UI and backend could begin work before final design approvals, eliminating unnecessary bottlenecks.
- Led cross-functional alignment: Facilitated collaborative working sessions to redesign the process and tested the new approach on an upcoming tile.
As a result, we reduced the tile delivery timeline from 8 weeks to 6 weeks (a full sprint faster), accelerating how quickly users could access and utilize their unused benefits and time-sensitive offers. This project reinforced the importance of continuously challenging legacy processes—even in an agile environment—to drive faster, smarter, and more efficient execution.
